New cops (and dogs) on the beat

22 new constables and three police dogs will start their new careers on the beat today, including a number on the North-West Coast.

Seven members of last week’s graduating class at the Tasmania Police Academy have been posted to the North-West Coast, with five to start duties in Devonport and two in Burnie.

The new recruits age in ranges from 18 to 42 and come from diverse background, including a former camel handler.

In addition to the new recruits, police dogs Basil, Tilly and Nikki have completed their training and will be deployed in Hobart and Devonport to sniff out firearms and explosives, and in Launceston for drug detection.

They will replace police dogs Fang, Olsen and Quinn who are preparing for retirement.
