Thousands of households and businesses across the North-West Coast were without power for prolonged periods during Wednesday afternoon and evening due to thunderstorms and lightning strikes.

TasNetworks says at the height of the storms, around 30,000 customers statewide were without power, with 28,000 of those on the North-West Coast.

Some of the worst affected areas included around Wynyard, Burnie, Yolla, Table Cape and surrounding districts, with the North West Regional Hospital in Burnie forced to go to back-up power.

Other areas of the Coast affected yesterday included Ulverstone, Gunns Plains, and Sheffield.

Around 1300 customers on the North-West Coast are still without power, but TasNetworks says it’s hoped to have all outages rectified by 5 pm on Thursday evening.

The company is also advising people to stay at least 10 metres clear of any fallen power lines and to report any damage to TasNetworks on 132 004.
