The Cradle Coast Waste Management Authority expects the the amount of rubbish being diverted to landfill on the North-West Coast to decrease this year.
In its annual report, the authority says rolling out food organic garden organic, or FOGO, recycling services to Devonport, Latrobe, Kentish and Waratah-Wynyard in July, will have a significant impact on reducing landfill.
More than 57,000 tonnes of waste was sent to landfill in the 2023-2024 financial year, an increase of 18 per cent on the previous year, mainly because of the West Coast and King Island Councils joining the authority.
The amount equates to an average of around 490 kilograms a year for every person in the Braddon Electorate.
The report also says more than 2.8 tonnes of hazardous chemicals were also collected during the year at special events at waste transfer stations across the Coast, and school education programmes were delivered to 19 schools.
It says the North West Recycling and Resource Recovery website, nrrr.com.au will play a big role in the way householders think about waste in the future.
