Dual Olympian and Tasmanian middle distance running star Stewart McSweyn says he’s fired up for the Tasmanian Christmas Carnivals Series later this month.
The 29 year-old King Islander, who qualified for the 5000m final at the Paris Olympics earlier this year, will target the 1600m Devonport Mile on December 29 and the Tasmanian Mile at the Burnie New Year’s Eve Carnival two days later.
McSweyn will run off the back mark in both events, but may have some company, with Launceston runner and Burnie Ten winner Sam Clifford, also looking at a stiff mark in at least one of the races.
Clifford says he’ll run at two carnivals during the series, but hasn’t made up his mind between Devonport, Burnie, and Hobart, which will be held on December 27.
He says he’s looking forward to going head to head with McSweyn, who he rates as one of the greatest distance runners of his generation, whether it’s at Devonport, Burnie, or both.
